Here’s What You Can Do.

By Michele Swetesich-Leon

Yes, I too get annoying clutter in my news feed from people whose posts I have no interest in.   Often these are people who I can’t really unfriend.  The answer to this conundrum is to “unfollow” them.  It’s super easy and they’ll be none the wiser.

If you’re not familiar with the follow feature you might be scratching your head.  Basically when you follow someone, you see their posts in your News Feed.  Of course not all of your friends posts show up in your news feed, but in theory they do.  Currently, when you become friends with people you automatically follow them.  This hasn’t always been the case.

There are two ways to unfollow someone.  You can do this directly in your news feed or you can visit the Friend’s profile.  I will go through both below.   You’ll see that I’ve blocked out the names to protect the innocent.  If you recognize them keep in mind this is just an exercise to show you how to unfollow your Friends.

Unfollowing Friends From the News Feed

  1. Locate the post (status update) in your news feed.
  2. Click the drop-down menu in the upper right corner of the post. Facebook post drop-down
  3. Locate the unfollow option and click on it.Facebook unfollow

That’s it!  You’ve painlessly solved you’re problem without losing a Friend.

Unfollowing Friends From Their Profile

  1. Go to the persons profile page and look at the bottom of their timeline image.
  2. Locate and click the “Following” button. Following on Facebook
  3. After clicking it the “Following” button should now say “Follow”. Facebook Profile follow

Voilà!   By unfollowing annoying people you create more space for posts from people you want to hear from.  NOTE:  You can always re-follow someone by going to their profile and clicking the “Follow” option.

If you’re feeling a little guilty about doing this to your Friends, get over it!  After all, it is your Facebook account and you’ll only see a limited percentage of your Friends updates based on Facebook’s algorithm.  I just recently was thinking about a Friend that I haven’t seen any posts from in a while so I went to their profile to see what they’ve been up to.   I figured I’d discover that they hadn’t posted much, but to my surprised they’d been posting daily.  What the heck?!

It prompted me to address some clutter I was ignoring in my news feed and to write this blog.  Hopefully I’ll start seeing more things I’m interested in in my news feed.

From my experience, the best way to deal with annoying Friends on Facebook is to UNFOLLOW them. And yes, that’s a tweetable!
